“A Flying Mind”
For this mural at KidsPeace, on the front of the building, I have decided to create Narrative Art; art that tells a short story. “A Flying mind” is a personification allegory. The bird in the three panels represents the mind, in this case the mind of a child.
In the first panel you can see the bird flying and looking for a place to settle. The bird is carrying a messenger bag and after flying for a while it has found nature in a spring time setting. Our mind wanders constantly and with the right kind of help we are capable of having the strength to look for what is good for us. A place where we feel safe; a place that can help shape our minds and souls.
In the second panel the bird has found a place where it feels comfortable, has hung up its messenger bag, and is looking around its surroundings. This tree branch represents KidsPeace. A place where children can learn to trust and begin their emotional development.
In the third panel the bird has taken a pair of eyeglasses, an olive branch, and a yellow butterfly out of its messenger bag. The bird has decided to wear these objects. Bald eagles are known for their highly acute vision but in this case the glasses symbolize how sometimes we need to experience and see life from an alternative perspective. In its beak it holds an olive branch that represents peace with one's own self, the peace of mind that these children both deserve and require. On top of its head is a yellow butterfly. In many Native American tribes the yellow butterfly symbolizes hope.
